French Polynesia 2015
Birdlife International, (SOP Manu) and Island Conservation carried out eradication of pest species on three atolls and three islands in the Acteon and Gambier groups French Polynesia 1600 kms east of Tahiti.
The domestic cargo vessel Nuku Hau transported bait, Jet A1, three helicopter buckets, supplies and field equipment from Tahiti to Acteon and Mangareva/Temoe.
The required amount of bait and Jet A-1 quantity for each site was offloaded using the helicopter to each of the six treatments areas.
The helicopter flew directly from Tahiti to motu Totegegie/Mangareva approx. 9h flight, 4 stops for refilling.
The first baiting run started with the Gambier islets, followed by Temoe and then Vahanga and Tenarunga, in order to match the Nuku Hau schedule and reduce the number of helicopter movements between project sites.
Bait application rate was 59 kg/ha (target application rate of 29.5kg/ha for each of two applications) for each of the six targeted islands.
Aircraft supplied and supported by Tahiti Helicopters.
Pilot Tony Michelle.
