Hawardax (Rat Island) 2008
Located at the far western end of the Aleutian Island chain that separates the Northern Pacific Ocean from the Bearing Sea, this 2500ha island is part of the Alaskan Maritime National Marine Reserve.
This project planned by Island Conservation and supported by US Fish and Wildlife and The Nature Conservancy treated the island to remove ship rats that had been resident on the island for some 200 years.
The project required two helicopters supplied by Pathfinder Aviation of Homer Alaska, to fly the 2100 kms and carry out two applications of 10kg/ha of bait.
Baiting pilots for the project were Peter Garden and Graeme Gale with supporting pilots Mike Fell and Merlin Handley of Pathfinder.
