Wake Atoll 2012
US Air Force operate Wake as a strategic military base in the mid Pacific. The operation here called for the eradication of Rattus Tanazumi (Asian rat) and Rattus exulans (Pacific rat).
The atoll is managed by a Native North American Indian group who supply the USAF with services and employ Philippino’s to carry out the service work.
The operation to spread bait meant having to work with three different groups when consulting, planning and implementing the eradication work. Two applications were applied and all buildings and structures baited by hand.
Pathfinder Aviation provided a Bell 206B3 which was flown to the atoll from Anchorage by USAF C17 aircraft.
All R Tanazumi were exterminated but R exulans survived (initially in very low numbers).
